All American Apple Pie

o

Nothing says fall like homemade pie! Right now apples are in season and never better!
You can make pie out of any kind of apples, The best (in my opinion) is the apple that is not to tart and not to sweet. Also one that is not to hard and not to soft...by that I mean, if you use too hard of an apple you'll burn the crust before the apples ever get done, and if their too soft, you will get apple sauce.

I chose to use a mix in my pie. Some fuji, golden delicious and granny smith's. Granny smith's are one of the harder ones, so I only used 2 of those and then a mix of the other two kinds.

Peel them and slice up thin, you will need about 2 1/2 pounds of apples or about 5-7 of them.
(the best way to tell if you have enough is to get the pie plate out and heap them in)

here they are ready to go,

put in 1/2 cup of sugar

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

dash of nutmeg

tablespoon of flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

stir, stir, stir (stop looking at my broken fingernail)

they look so good just like that! before cooking,

place bottom pie crust in pie plate and trim about 1/2 inch from the edge

slowly place the apples in the pie shell, arranging evenly

dot the top of apples with small pieces of butter

Place the top pie crust over the top

carefully placed

there we go!

trim the excess sides, the same as the as the bottom crust 1/2 inch from the edge

go around the edge and turn under like this

now for the edging, you do this with your thumb and forefinger and with the other hands forefinger you press against the dough, forming a seal

go around the whole pie like this

there we go!

sprinkle the top lightly with suger and bake at 375 for 50-60 minutes

while your pie is baking, you can make a treat with the excess trimmings of dough
just roll out and dot with butter and sprinkle with cinnamon sugar, bake 375 for 10 minutes

They taste great with a hot cup of tea!

When the pie is done it will start to bubble up through the slits in the crust like this

The pie crust in so tender, and flaky and the apples are soft but stay together, and just a little juice slowly seeps out the sides.....Don't forget the vanilla ice cream....heaven!

  1. Okay, now I'm going to go make an apple pie - maybe not quite like yours, but darn close. Thank you, cousin!
