I remember a particular scene, when I was a teenager and had gone to Seattle and a 'bum' had come up to me and asked for some money, and I had not given him any, even though I had some....I came home and proudly told my tale....and I sure wasn't ready for the lecture that was to follow...I will never, ever forget his words.....He said 'Debbie, that man needs that drink or he'll die' and he went on to tell me if I only had a nickel to give, that I needed to give that, to never, ever turn away....you see my father once was that 'bum' on the street, and knew of the craving for drink, and the sure death it would bring without it....I learned not to judge the street people, everyone of them have their story....and I learned to be very proud of my heritage and the greatest lesson my father ever taught......
Today I have been singing this song to myself....here is the words
It is a song we sing in church...
Because I Have Been Given Much
written by: Grace Noll Crowell.
Because I have been given much, I too must give.
Because of thy great bounty, Lord each day I live.
I shall divide my gifts from thee with every brother that I see,
who has the need of help from me.
Because I have been sheltered, fed by thy good care…
I cannot see another’s lack and I not share
my glowing fire, my loaf of bread-my roof’s safe shelter over head,
that he too may be comforted.
Because I have been blessed by thy great love dear Lord,
I’ll share thy love again according to thy word.
I shall give love to those in need.
I’ll show that love by word and deed,
thus shall my thanks be thanks indeed.
These are the faces of the new homeless......
they would take a nickel.........
This one is for you Dad....
Cheers to Whiskey Bill !!
What a very nice tribute to your dad. He really was amazing with all he did for others. He learned hard lessons, and then used what he had learned to make his corner of the world a better place.
