..it is one lane and very curvy with a cliff on one side and no guard rails....the rental car agreement says it will not cover you if you go down that road....so of course off we went! The drive is stunning...so you want to use all the pull offs so you can take photos...
like this great view....
and this one too....
and here are Hawaiian cows.....
you see this beautiful little place...
and coconut trees...
and this is why we came on this drive....to see this cliff and the village that lays, tucked away in it's fold....
...most of the people who live here try to find work here...this is not a road you would want to navigate daily.....you can catch a glimpse of the early civilizations that once inhabited the island. True Hawaiian lifestyle is still evident in this secluded village. Kahakuloa Head, a 636-foot tall cliff that overlooks the town where an old Hawaiian legend says King Kahekili used to jump from every morning into the water below. They say that the King built his houses from the skulls of his enemies....
Kahakuloa Hawaiian Congregational Church, North Shore, West Side.....that is the name of this sweet little church....I have searched the Internet for any history or information that say something about this church but nothing....not anything....It really is a very unknown area....
here is the steeple....it is weathered and worn....the church is not used anymore....it stands as a sentinel...keeping watch of this little village....
it has a great view of the ocean and the cliff.....
there are graves on the ground around the church....
it has stunning flowers......
that smell so sweet......
the little green church with a red tiled roof....it has so much to tell...so many happy occasions and some sad occasions and people and song....and prayers, lots of prayers....oh if those walls could just speak....I would love to listen and hear.....
Cheers to Happy !!
Oh, I think you found a little treasure there. I love this, and wish I had found it when I was there. That is enough to make me want to go back, just to see this wonderful little village. Beautiful photos and story. Thank you!!!
ReplyDeleteGreat pics, Debbie. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteToo bad it doesn't have services anymore per your comments above (I was googling to find the time :( , we recalled the sign saying 11am and were considering driving back for that tomorrow. it was truly a gem on the north shores!! Rick and Dalayne of Michigan :)
