Sunday Eventide

Eventide a very unique word....recently my mother was very ill, in the hospital intensive care unit and was in serious condition for 6 days...our most beloved mother was very, very ill....during that time, at night when I slept, I sang....it seemed I sang all night long...I sang the song..Abide with me; Tis Eventide...I hadn't sang that song or heard that song since my grandmothers funeral at least 25 years ago. Amazingly, while I slept and sang, I knew every word. The first verse is :

Abide with me; tis eventide.
The day is past and gone.
The shadows of the evening fall,
The night is coming on.
With-in my heart a welcome guest,
With-in my home abide.
O Savior stay this night with me;
Behold tis Eventide.
O Savior stay this night with me;
Behold tis Eventide.

I would wake up and forget the words right away and I meant to take the time to get out the hymn book and look up the song and read the words to find their meaning...I really didn't even know what Eventide was..

Time went on and Mom got better and got to go stay at a rehab house for a few weeks...which once during that time I took her, to her house for the evening so she could sit in her chair and be home...when we were headed back to the rehab...we were coming down the road and she said... 'I love this time of day..It's called eventide' ..well I think my head spun off as I turned to look at her, I couldn't believe she was using the word 'Eventide' the word from my very own sleep song.I had never heard anyone using that word. I told her about my night singing and the song....I have since looked up the meaning, and the words to my song...maybe someday I will memorize the words and be able to torture those around me by singing repeatably to them...

Eventide today in Tacoma

Eventide means the time of day between evening and night, that short span of time just before it gets dark...
the time of day you don't know whether to put your lights on or not. I do know it is the best time of day to walk through neighborhoods...it is the time when the lights in the house are on and the shades are still open and you can see inside of people's houses.

Many times, we get to be lucky enough to see a beautiful sunset at Eventide..
with pink cotton candy clouds, these beautiful pink clouds are from my Annie girl's deck at Eventide in sunny Selah Washington.

Cheers to Happy  !!

  1. Debbie oh Debbie you really touched my heart. I have always loved that time of day the most, hon. I don't have the words to that tune in my head, and I always call it "twilight". It is so peaceful! We are all tucked in our homes and "the day is nigh, all is well" - goodnight. Those quoted words just came to me from a song as I was writing this! Those are the only lyrics I can remember at the moment, I hope I can remember more. Thanks Debbie for opening my mind to your life and your Mom and our Gramma's wonderful words!!!
